Nitra region is located in the south-west part of Slovakia. The capital of the region is Nitra, which is also the fourth-largest city in Slovakia. The region covers area of the Danubian Flat and the Danubian Hills. It is the warmest region in Slovakia and also very fertile. What attracts in the Nitra district the most, it is the beauty of nature and rich cultural heritage. The landmarks of the Nitra region are Levic, Nitra, the village of Brhlovce. Other worth seeing monuments are old churches, castles and palaces. Among them, the most popular are the Nitra castle or the Topolcanky Palace. Nitra region is ideal place for cycling, hiking or thermal baths.
Nitra is considered to be the oldest town in Slovakia. It was a seat of Nitra kingdom in the 9th century. The 11th-century Nitra castle is towering over the city. The oldest part is the Romanesque church and together with the Upper and Lower Church is the most valuable object of the castle, named the Bishop's Cathedral.
In the Nitra region, there is also a precious archeological site, in Drazovce. It protects Slavic settlement and an old graveyard. Tourists can also admire the well-preserved Romanesque church of St. Michael. The another very interesting site is the pre-Romanesque church of St. George, built in the 10th century. It is the oldest preserved pre-Romanesque church in Slovakia with the oldest Slovakia's frescos from the 11th century. At the foot of the Tribec mountain, there is located the Classicistic castle wing of the former Habsburg family's summer residence. At the beginning of the 19th century, the south wing was destroyed and the new Classicistic track was established on that place. On the Nira region, ruins of castles can be found there such as ruins of castles Gymes and Hrusov.
