Levoca is a typical medieval town which is considered to be one of the best-preserved medieval towns in Europe. Levoca was built in the 13th century and it became the Royal City. Very important trade route run through Levoca. It was Via Magna which connects Hungary with Poland (Kraków). The city developed vigorously up to the 19th century. Then it lost in significance and thanks to that, Levoca has survived unchanged to our times. The uniqueness of the historic town of Levoca with Spissky Hrad and the associated cultural monuments were inscribed into UNESCO list in 1993. One of the attractions of Levoca is Spissky Hrad. Spissky Hrad is one of the largest ruin of castle complex in the Central Europe and it is a outstanding example of military, political and religious buildings in eastern Europe. The oldest written mention of the castle is dated back to 1120. The castle had various functions: border fortress, seat of Spis zupan, representative noble seat. The castle was burnt by fire in 1780. It went to rack and ruin up to 1970 as the conservation works begun. Today, tourists can visit exhibitions of the Spis Museum refering to the castle history, medieval weapons and feudal law in the castle.
Levoca is said to be a pearl of Spis. There are medieval churches, the highest wooden Gothic-style altar in the world, city walls, the Townhall, Neo-gothic building of Basilica of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The most important place is he Market Square surrounded by historical monuments. In St. James church there can be found Master Paul's masterpiece – the late- Gothic altar which is 18,6m high. The 15th-century Town Hall with a characteristic Renaissance tower clock, grabs many tourists' attention. The 16th-century Cage of Shame is a unique landmark which presents the example of public punishment of people who commited treason. On the Maria Hora, there is situated Virgin Mary basilica which is a place of many pilgrimages. Thurzo house is one of the most beautiful burger houses in Levoca.
